The Vocabulary
You do not need to be a designer. You need design words.
You already know what looks good and what looks bad. You can tell when a website feels professional versus amateur. The challenge is translating that gut feeling into words AI can act on.
Here is the design vocabulary that gets results. These are the words that turn "make it look nice" into something AI can actually build:
SPACE
White space / breathing room
"Add more white space between sections." "Give the content room to breathe." The number one difference between amateur and professional design is space.
COLOR
Color palette descriptions
"Dark mode with purple accents." "Warm, earthy tones — soft cream background, terracotta accent." "High contrast, black and white with one bold blue."
SHAPE
Corners, borders, and shapes
"Rounded corners on all cards." "Subtle borders, very light gray." "Pill-shaped buttons." These small details create the overall feeling.
TYPE
Typography and text
"Clean sans-serif font." "Large, bold headings with lighter body text." "Use a monospace font for data/numbers." Typography is 50% of good design.
