Every genre has a fingerprint. Learn it, prompt it, nail it.
AI music generators understand genre through patterns — tempo ranges, instrument choices, rhythm structures, and tonal qualities. When you understand what makes a genre sound like itself, you can describe it precisely to AI and get authentic results.
Here are the DNA profiles of the eight most commercially viable genres:
Eight genres decoded with ready-to-use prompt templates.
1. Lo-Fi Hip-Hop — BPM: 70-90. Instruments: dusty piano, vinyl crackle, soft boom-bap drums, jazz guitar samples. Mood: nostalgic, cozy, study-session. AI excels here. Prompt: "Lo-fi hip-hop, 80 BPM, jazzy piano chords, vinyl texture, side-chain compression on kick, mellow and nostalgic, late-night study vibes."
2. Trap — BPM: 130-170. Instruments: 808 sub-bass, sharp hi-hats with rolls, snappy snares, dark synth leads. Mood: aggressive, flexing, dark. AI is strong here — 808 patterns are well-represented in training data. Prompt: "Hard trap beat, 145 BPM, heavy 808 bass slides, rapid hi-hat rolls, dark minor key melody, aggressive energy, Lex Luger style."
3. Pop — BPM: 100-130. Instruments: clean synths, claps, four-on-the-floor kick pattern, bright vocals, layered harmonies. Mood: uplifting, catchy, anthemic. AI does well with structure but can sound generic — add specificity. Prompt: "Modern pop, 118 BPM, bright synth arpeggios, punchy drums, female vocal, soaring chorus with layered harmonies, Dua Lipa energy."
4. R&B/Neo-Soul — BPM: 65-100. Instruments: Rhodes piano, smooth bass, finger snaps, lush pads, warm vocals. Mood: intimate, sensual, late-night. Prompt: "Neo-soul R&B, 88 BPM, warm Rhodes chords, smooth bass groove, subtle drum machine, intimate male vocal, candlelit atmosphere, SZA meets Frank Ocean."
5. Electronic/House — BPM: 120-130. Instruments: four-on-the-floor kick, open hi-hats, synth stabs, bass drops, vocal chops. Mood: euphoric, dancefloor, energy. Prompt: "Deep house, 124 BPM, groovy bassline, shuffled hi-hats, atmospheric pads, vocal chop samples, 3 AM club energy, build to drop."
6. Indie/Alternative — BPM: 100-140. Instruments: jangly electric guitars, analog synths, live-feeling drums, breathy vocals. Mood: wistful, authentic, emotional. AI sometimes struggles with the "imperfect" feel — add descriptors. Prompt: "Indie rock, 120 BPM, reverb-heavy jangly guitars, driving drums, breathy vocal, melancholic but hopeful, Radiohead meets Phoebe Bridgers."
7. Country — BPM: 90-140. Instruments: acoustic guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, banjo, country twang vocal. Mood: storytelling, heartland, honest. Prompt: "Modern country, 105 BPM, acoustic guitar strumming, pedal steel slides, warm male vocal with slight twang, front-porch storytelling, summer night drive."
8. Latin/Reggaeton — BPM: 85-100. Instruments: dembow rhythm, perreo bass, tropical percussion, brass hits, Latin guitar. Mood: party, sensual, summer. Prompt: "Reggaeton, 95 BPM, classic dembow rhythm, heavy bass, tropical percussion, Latin guitar riff, Bad Bunny energy, bilingual hook Spanish-English."
