Step one: find your school's academic integrity policy. It's usually in the student handbook or on the dean's website. Search for "artificial intelligence," "AI," "generative," or "automated tools." Green (almost always OK): Using AI to brainstorm ideas, check grammar, explain concepts you don't understand, generate practice problems, or organize your notes. This is like using a calculator or spell-check — it's a tool that helps you learn, not a replacement for learning.

Yellow (ask first): Using AI to outline an essay, summarize readings, translate text, debug code, or generate study materials from course content. These are legitimate uses, but some professors want you to do this work yourself. When in doubt, ask. A 10-second email saves a semester of stress.

Red (don't do it): Submitting AI-generated text as your own writing. Having AI write your essays, solve your problem sets, or complete your lab reports. Copying AI output into exams. Using AI during proctored tests. This isn't a gray area — it's academic fraud, and AI detection tools are getting better every semester.

Pro tip: The test is simple. If removing the AI would mean you can't do the work at all, you've crossed the line. AI should make your existing skills sharper, not replace skills you haven't built yet.

When you use AI, say so. Here's exactly how.

APA 7th edition now has official guidelines for citing AI. MLA updated theirs in 2024. Chicago style followed in early 2025. The format varies, but the principle is the same: transparency. You tell the reader what tool you used, what you asked it, and how you used the output.

APA format: "When prompted with [your prompt], ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2026) generated [description of output]. The output was used to [how you used it]." Include a reference entry: OpenAI. (2026). ChatGPT (Version GPT-4o) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com

Many professors now include an "AI use disclosure" section at the end of assignments. Even if yours doesn't require it, adding a brief note like "I used Claude to help brainstorm thesis angles, then wrote the essay independently" shows integrity and builds trust.

AI detectors are flawed — but that doesn't mean you're safe.

Tools like Turnitin's AI detector, GPTZero, and Originality.ai flag text as "likely AI-generated" based on statistical patterns. They're not perfect — false positives hit about 9% of human-written text in independent testing. But here's what matters: if your professor uses one and it flags your work, YOU have to prove it's yours. That burden of proof is brutal.

Consequences range from a zero on the assignment to expulsion. Most schools use a progressive system: first offense is a warning or grade penalty, second offense is course failure, third is suspension. But some schools skip straight to academic probation. Don't find out the hard way.

The smartest approach: use AI as a learning accelerator, not a shortcut. When you understand the material deeply enough to explain it to a friend, you've learned it. AI helped you get there faster — and that's the whole point.
