- Store — Save important context to a persistent system (database, files, knowledge base)
- Structure — Organize it so relevant context can be found quickly
- Load — Feed the right context to your AI at the start of every conversation

Create a single text file — call it my-ai-context.txt — and paste it at the start of every conversation.
Include:
- Who you are and what you do (2-3 sentences)
- Your current projects and priorities
- Your preferences (tone, format, technical level)
- Common mistakes your AI makes that you want to prevent
Pros: Dead simple. Works with any AI tool. No technical skills needed.
Cons: Manual. You have to remember to paste it. Doesn't scale past a few paragraphs. Gets stale unless you update it regularly.
Best for: People who use AI occasionally and want quick improvement.
Level 2: Claude Projects or Custom GPTs (15 minutes)
Use the built-in persistence features of your AI platform.
In Claude, create a Project and add your context documents — brand guidelines, writing samples, project briefs, SOPs. Every conversation within that Project automatically has access to these files.
In ChatGPT, build a Custom GPT with your instructions and reference files baked in.
Pros: No copy-pasting. Context loads automatically. Good enough for most individual use cases.
Cons: Limited file sizes. No semantic search — the AI reads everything, even irrelevant parts. Managing multiple projects gets messy. Context is tied to one platform.
Best for: Individuals or small teams committed to one AI platform.
Level 3: The CLAUDE.md / System Prompt Pattern (30 minutes)
If you use Claude Code or any AI tool that supports persistent system prompts, create a structured instruction file that loads automatically.
This is more powerful than a context file because it's:
- Always loaded (you can't forget to paste it)
- Structured with sections (identity, rules, preferences, current work)
- Version controlled if you keep it in a git repository

Level 4: External Knowledge Base + RAG (2-4 hours)
Build an actual database that stores your context and retrieves relevant pieces using semantic search (RAG — Retrieval Augmented Generation).
This is where things get genuinely powerful. Instead of dumping your entire context into every conversation, a RAG system:
- Stores hundreds or thousands of context snippets
- Uses embeddings to find the most relevant ones for each query
- Feeds only what's needed into the conversation
Tools that make this accessible without heavy engineering:
- Notion + AI integration — your existing notes become searchable context
- Obsidian + vector plugins — local-first knowledge base with semantic search
- Supabase + pgvector — for builders who want full control
Pros: Scales infinitely. Only loads relevant context. Gets smarter as you add more data.
Cons: Requires technical setup. Needs maintenance. More complex than most people need.
Best for: Teams, power users, or anyone whose context doesn't fit in a single file.
Level 5: The Living Brain (ongoing)

Step 1 (today): Write a 200-word context file. Who you are, what you're working on, how you like your AI to communicate. Save it somewhere you won't lose it.
Step 2 (this week): Paste it at the start of your next 5 AI conversations. Notice the difference in output quality.
Step 3 (next week): Upgrade to Level 2 or 3. Set up a Claude Project or system prompt so the context loads automatically.
Step 4 (when you're ready): Start saving outputs back. After a great conversation, add the key decisions or learnings to your context file. This is where memory becomes compounding.
The jump from "no context" to "basic context file" is the biggest improvement you'll make. Everything after that is optimization.
