Two AI coding tools dominate the developer conversation right now: Claude Code and Cursor. Both promise to transform how you write software. Both deliver. But they work in fundamentally different ways.
I use both daily. Here's the honest breakdown.
The Core Difference
Cursor is an AI-powered IDE. It's a fork of VS Code with AI completions, inline edits, and chat built into the editor. You code in Cursor the way you'd code in VS Code — but with an AI copilot watching every keystroke.
Claude Code is an AI-powered terminal. It runs in your command line, reads your entire codebase, and executes tasks autonomously — editing files, running commands, managing git. You describe what you want, and it builds it.
The difference is philosophical:
- Cursor = AI assists while you code
- Claude Code = AI codes while you direct

Where Claude Code Wins
1. Autonomous Task Execution
Tell Claude Code to "refactor the auth module to use JWT tokens" and walk away. It reads every relevant file, plans the changes, implements them across your codebase, runs the tests, and reports back. You approve the final diff.
Cursor can do multi-file edits, but it's more interactive. You're still steering the ship keystroke by keystroke.
2. Terminal-Native Workflows
Claude Code lives where developers already work — the terminal. No new IDE to learn. No editor migration. It works alongside whatever editor you already use.

3. Git Operations
Claude Code handles git natively. Commits with well-written messages. Creates branches. Opens pull requests with descriptions. Resolves merge conflicts.

Cursor doesn't touch git. You're still running git commands yourself or using VS Code's git panel.
4. MCP Server Integration
Claude Code connects to external tools via MCP (Model Context Protocol) — databases, Slack, GitHub Issues, Stripe, monitoring dashboards. It can query your production database, read error logs from Sentry, and check Slack threads — all within a coding session.
Cursor has no equivalent. It works with your code files and nothing else.
5. CLAUDE.md Project Memory
Create a CLAUDE.md file in your repo with project standards, architecture decisions, and build commands. Every Claude Code session reads it automatically. It's like permanent project onboarding that never gets stale.
Cursor has .cursorrules which serves a similar purpose — instructions the AI follows for your project.
Where Cursor Wins
1. Real-Time Inline Completions
Cursor's killer feature is tab completion. As you type, it predicts the next line, the next function, sometimes the next 20 lines. Press Tab and keep going. It's fast and addictive.
Claude Code doesn't do inline completions. It's not watching you type. You ask for something, it builds it, you review it.
2. Visual Diff Review
Cursor shows proposed changes as inline diffs directly in your editor. You see exactly what's changing, highlighted in green and red, right where the code lives. Accept or reject per-line.
Claude Code shows diffs in the terminal. It's functional but less visual.
3. Lower Barrier to Entry
Cursor looks like VS Code. If you know VS Code, you know Cursor. There's no terminal to learn, no new mental model.
Claude Code requires comfort with the command line. For developers who live in their IDE, Cursor feels more natural.
4. Free Tier
Cursor offers a free tier with 2,000 completions per month. Good enough to evaluate whether AI coding works for you.
Claude Code has no free tier. You need at least a Claude Pro subscription ($20/month) to start.
5. Multi-Model Choice
Cursor lets you switch between Claude, GPT-4o, and other models. If one model struggles with a particular task, you can try another.
Claude Code uses Claude models exclusively (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku). You can switch between them, but you're staying in the Claude family.
The Daily Driver Question
Here's how I actually use both:
Cursor for:
- Writing new code from scratch (the inline completions are addictive)
- Quick single-file edits
- Exploring unfamiliar code visually
Claude Code for:
- Multi-file refactors
- Debugging complex issues (it traces through the whole codebase)
- Git workflows (commits, PRs, branch management)
- Connecting to external systems (databases, APIs, monitoring)
- Tasks I want done autonomously while I focus on something else
They're not competitors in my workflow. They're complements. Cursor is my writing tool. Claude Code is my building tool.
Which Should You Start With?
Start with Cursor if:
- You're already a VS Code user
- You want AI completions while you type
- You prefer visual interfaces over terminals
- You want a free tier to test the waters
Start with Claude Code if:
- You're comfortable in the terminal
- You want AI to handle entire tasks autonomously
- You need git integration built into your AI workflow
- You work across many files and want deep codebase understanding
- You need to connect to external tools and services
Use both if:
- You're a professional developer who ships code daily
- You want the best of both worlds — real-time completions AND autonomous task execution
The Bottom Line
Cursor makes you faster at writing code. Claude Code makes you faster at building software. Those are different things.
Writing code is typing functions, debugging syntax, implementing algorithms. Building software is architecture, multi-file coordination, testing, deployment, git management, and integrating with the rest of your stack.
If you only pick one, pick the one that matches where you spend your time. If you spend most of your day writing new code line by line, Cursor. If you spend most of your day coordinating changes across a codebase, Claude Code.
If you can afford both, use both. That's what I do, and the combination is more powerful than either tool alone.
