I've been using Claude every day for over a year. In the beginning, I treated it like a search engine with better grammar. Now it's the most leveraged tool in my stack — writing, coding, research, strategy, all of it.
The difference wasn't Claude getting smarter. It was me getting better at using it.
Here are 10 techniques that fundamentally changed my output. If you use Claude professionally, even one of these will save you hours this week.
1. Write a System Prompt Like You're Onboarding a New Hire
Most people skip the system prompt or write something vague like "You are a helpful assistant." That's leaving performance on the table.
Your system prompt should answer three questions: Who is Claude in this context? What does it know about the task? What are the constraints?
A good system prompt I use for content work:
You are a senior content strategist for a B2B SaaS company. Our audience is technical decision-makers (CTOs, VPs of Engineering). We avoid jargon-heavy marketing speak. We write in short, direct sentences. Every piece should have a clear takeaway.
That one paragraph eliminates 80% of the back-and-forth I used to do.
2. Force Chain-of-Thought When Accuracy Matters
When I need Claude to reason through something complex — pricing models, architecture decisions, legal language — I add one line:
"Think through this step by step before giving your answer."
This isn't a hack. It's how the model works. Asking Claude to show its reasoning produces measurably better outputs on tasks that require logic, math, or multi-step analysis.
3. Use Artifacts for Anything You'll Iterate On
If you're asking Claude to write code, draft a document, or build a table — use artifacts. They persist across your conversation, you can edit them in place, and you can download or copy the result without hunting through chat history.
The workflow: generate in an artifact → refine with follow-ups → export. It's faster than copy-pasting from the chat window every time.
4. Projects Are Your Secret Weapon
Claude Projects let you upload reference documents, set persistent instructions, and create a workspace that remembers your context.
I have one for "Blog Writing," one for "Code Review," one for "Client Proposals." Each has the relevant style guides, brand voice docs, and templates uploaded. When I start a task, Claude already knows the context. No re-explaining.
5. Memory Is Underrated
Claude's memory feature (in the paid plans) lets it remember your preferences, tools, writing style, and recurring needs across conversations. Tell it once: "I prefer TypeScript over JavaScript" or "Always format dates as YYYY-MM-DD" — and it sticks.
The people who complain Claude "doesn't remember anything" haven't set up memory. It takes 5 minutes and changes everything.
6. Custom Instructions Are Your Default Prompt
Think of custom instructions as the system prompt that runs every single conversation. Mine includes my role, my communication preferences, and a few hard rules ("Never use placeholder text. Always give complete, working code.").
This is the highest-leverage 2 minutes you'll spend. Write it once, benefit forever.
7. XML Tags Give You Surgical Control
When you need Claude to handle structured input — like separating context from instructions, or providing multiple examples — use XML tags.

Claude parses these cleanly. It's the difference between a vague request and a precise one.
8. Few-Shot Examples Beat Long Explanations
Instead of writing a 200-word description of the format you want, give Claude 2-3 examples. Show, don't tell.
"Write me a product description" produces generic output. But give it three examples of descriptions you've already written? Now it mirrors your voice, length, and structure.
9. Temperature Matters More Than You Think
Most people never touch the temperature setting. But it makes a real difference. For creative work (brainstorming, copy variations, naming), a higher temperature gives you range. For analytical work (code, data analysis, fact-checking), keep it low.
Default isn't always optimal. Experiment with it.
10. The Secret Trick: Give Claude a Role AND a Constraint
This is the one most people miss. Don't just tell Claude who to be — tell it what to avoid.
"You are a senior copywriter. Never use the words 'innovative,' 'cutting-edge,' or 'revolutionary.' Never start a sentence with 'In today's world.'"
The constraint is what makes the output exceptional. It forces Claude off autopilot and into specific, thoughtful territory.
