3 questions before you greenlight anything.
Before any AI initiative gets budget, headcount, or executive attention, it needs to pass through these three gates. Write them on a card. Tape them to your monitor. Use them in every meeting where someone pitches an AI project.
"What's the business problem?"
Not "what can AI do for us" but "what problem are we solving, and would we invest in solving it even if AI didn't exist?" If the answer is no, the project isn't worth your time regardless of the technology.
"Where's the data?"
AI runs on data. If your data is scattered across 15 systems, unstructured, ungoverned, or incomplete, the AI project will fail before it starts. The honest answer here saves you months of expensive discovery later.
"What does 'good enough' look like?"
AI is probabilistic. It gives you 85-95% accuracy on most tasks, not 100%. If your use case can't tolerate that margin of error, AI isn't the right tool. If it can, define the acceptable threshold before you start.
Use this in your next AI briefing: "Walk me through the specific workflow this changes. Show me the current cost of that workflow, the expected cost after AI, and how we'll measure the difference at 30, 60, and 90 days." Any team that can't answer this isn't ready to deploy.
